Pratapgarh Festivals

Rich in natural beauty and an ideal blend of Malwa, Mewar and Vagad cultures, Pratapgarh is surrounded by Udaipur, Banswara, Chittorgarh districts of Rajasthan and Ratlam, Neemuch and Mandsaur districts of Madhya Pradesh (MP).

The main language of the region is Hindi, however, Malvi, Mewari and Vagadi are spoken.

The district consists of members of all sects, religions and castes. The predominant inhabitants are the traditional Meena tribals, who are particularly dependent on agriculture, animal husbandry and forestry, with their own culture, dress, dialect, rituals, fairs and festivals.

A good number of Bohra families who are engaged in foreign trade and business in Middle East countries. Some tribals have a tradition of 'second marriage' as an accepted social practice. Like many other places in the area, the most prominent custom is the "mautana" (heavy cash fines are imposed on the offender's family).

Before any auspicious event, people organize Gangoz, night-awakening and get evacuation from "Devara" - the temple of local deities.

The major fairs of this region are- Ambamata Mela, Sita Mata Mela, Gautameshwar Mela ('Vaishakh-Poornima'), Bhanwar Mata Mela (Hariyali Amavasya), Gupteshwar Mahadev fair, Sayyadi Kaka Saheb's Urs. Small places near around Pratapgarh like Hori-Hanumanji, Gangeshwar Fairs are also held at Parsola.

However, all the major Hindu festivals like Diwali, Govardhan Puja, Holi (Rang Teres), 'Raksha Bandhan', 'Mahashivratri', 'Hanuman Jayanti' and 'Vijayadashami' are celebrated in Pratapgad with joy and gaiety

Some of the main festivals are -

  • Vaishakha Purnima at Gautameshwar in Aranod and Hanuman Jayanti fair in Soli Hanuma
  • Maha Shivaratri Fair and Gangeshwar Fair (Bambori) in Chhotisadadi
  • Rang Panchami in Dhariyavad and Rathmeela in Parsola of Dhariyavad and Vaishakh Purnima fair in Managaon.
  • Maha Shivaratri Fair, Gupteshwar Mahadev Fair and Ambamata Fair in Pratapgad which falls on Bhai Dooj.
